007: How to Keep an Eye on the Competition

It doesn’t matter what business you’re part of, getting one up on the competition is the number one goal. If you can find a way to take away potential customers from your rivals and bring them under your umbrella, you’ll be making some big strides. Want to be a spy MI5 would be proud of? Find a strategy and use the right tools. Luckily for you, we’ve got together a list of some of our top tips for monitoring the competition.

Keyword Planner

The weapon of choice for most digital marketers: Google Keyword Planner should be an essential part of your arsenal. The tool allows you to see the amount of users that are looking for different terms connected to your business.

An example of this would be a chocolate company finding out the amount of users searching for the term ‘chocolate bars UK’. With Keyword Planner, you can find those terms your competitors aren’t using, as well as those that they are.

This one is a Bark speciality. Offering untold amounts of detail, we don’t think we’ve even scratched the surface of what is possible with this fantastic software. SEMrush gives you all the backlink data you could want with additional information on the traffic that your competitors are running off with. You’ll also find copious amounts of keyword data and the meticulous details that come with that. Simply paste your rival’s URL in the search bar at the top and you’ll see what you’ve been missing.

Backlinks are a fundamental part of any SEO strategy. If you have a decent amount of backlinks on your pages, you should be appearing higher up on organic search engine results. Majestic can be used with a subscription or for free (obviously with certain benefits stripped). Similarly to SEMrush, Majestic allows you to post your rival’s URL and sit back and wait for the results. With this tool, you’ll be able to tell if you need some more work done to your link profile to one up your competitors.

A social media guru’s saving grace – Hootsuite provides you with the ability to keep track of over 30 social networks at one. While Hootsuite is initially free, we’d recommend signing up for a free trial to see if the added benefits will be of any use. As with all our other tools, it really is as simple as placing a URL into the dashboard and waiting for the results. Whether it’s tracking keywords or hashtags, Hootsuite has a multitude of very useful assets.

All of these pieces of software will give you a great chance of stepping over the competition in the digital marathon. Our advice? Employ them all to your services now and get your brand buzzing.
